At the end of 2009 I joined the crew at Prime Focus to work on Avatar. Coming off of 2012 another blockbuster movie was going to be a great way to finish up the year. I was hired on as a 3d Generalist.
Prime Focus was deep in development of the holo tables and screens. They were also given the task to populate the airfield out side the windows (image below). As a generalist I started on the project animating the helicopters with animation supervisor Daniel Loeb. I then moved on to creating and placing factory’s, hangers, and buildings onto a fake trans-light with CG Supervisor Mitch Gates.
The Prime Focus VFX team also created displays called Immersives that provided a 180-degree stereo perspective, allowing military personnel to control air traffic flow in 3D. Additionally, Prime Focus contributed CG helicopters, buildings and atmospheric elements seen from the Ops Center and Commissary windows in several sequences.
