What is overscan?

Overscan is used mainly in the compositing pipeline. Adding post effects like “camera shake” or “Lens Distortions” you will need extra space around the outside of a frame otherwise the border will appear. You can use it solely to get an overscan frame size or after you have already framed your scene with the camera mm adjustments and need to now overscan it.

The Math:

Overscan a frame:

( ( Frame x Overscan percent as a decimal ) + Width ) = New Overscan Size
( ( 1920 x .20 ) + 1920 ) = 2304
( ( 1080 x .20 ) + 1080 ) = 1296

Overscan a camera

( Camera Lens mm ( Camera Lens mm x Overscan percent as a decimal ) ) = New Camera mm
( 24 ( 24 .20) ) = 19.2
